Two years ago, a group of FUUSN musicians and some friends from local congregations traveled to Germany Tand provided music for the worship services at the first-ever EUT (Europäischer Unitariertag, aka European Unitarians Together). It was a grand adventure. In six weeks, a smaller batch of musicians will arrive in Berlin to help with the music at the 2nd EUT. As Inga Brandes, ICUU President, and Rev. Sara Ascher, ICUU Executive Director, write:
As representatives of the International Council of Unitarians and Universalists (ICUU) we are delighted to participate in European Unitarians Together (EUT) once again. This meeting of Unitarians, Unitarian Universalists, Free Religious and Humanists from different parts of Europe is hosted by two of our member organizations: the Unitarier – Religionsgemeinschaft freien Glaubens (URFG) and the European Unitarian Universalists (EUU).
In our worldwide experience in helping emerging Unitarian and Unitarian Universalist groups, we know how important it is to come together, exchange ideas, and get to know each other. Our various faith traditions have tremendous common ground. At the same time our different cultural practices require each one of us to live our religion by honouring the ‘other’. We acknowledge that this is not always easy. But we have found that it is extremely rewarding.
Berlin holds special meaning for our extended community. The International Association for Religious Freedom (IARF) held its World Congress of Free Christianity and Religious Progress here in 1910. Berlin is also home to the Unitarian Church in Berlin, founded in 1948.
I will be helping to lead music in the worship services at the EUT, and our band of merry travelers (from our congregations in Dedham and Groton) will present a concert there, with help from some of our European friends. We are happy to welcome more singers to join us – drop me a line at firstname.lastname@example.org. I am grateful to Karsten Urban for his invitation to me, and I’m proud to represent FUUSN in Berlin this June.
